TO support local farmers, the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera (DA-CAR) took action by facilitating the linkage of approximately 9 metric tons of cabbages. The vegetables were sourced from both the Benguet Agri Pinoy Trading Center and La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post to assist farmers facing challenges in selling their produce.
The gathered cabbages, which were sold at a range of P10 to P15 per kilo, found a new market as they were purchased by employees of DA-CAR, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and Bureau of Plant Industry, their walk-in clients, and various government agencies and partner local government units, including the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Labor and Employment, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, National Economic and Development Authority, and National Police Commission, among others.
OIC-Regional Executive Director Atty. Jennilyn Dawayan initiated the call for support, through the Cordillera Association of Regional Executives (CARE), where agencies responded.
The estimated gross sales from this initiative reached a substantial P41,000. These funds will be distributed proportionally among the farmers, showcasing a concerted effort to alleviate the economic burden faced by vegetable growers. This initiative also underscores the importance of government agencies working together to bolster the agricultural industry.
As of today, January 6, DA-CAR continues its efforts, linking farmers in need to institutional partners and consumers in the BLISTT (Baguio, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba, and Tublay) areas and other regions in the coming weeks.
