THE  Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through its Forest Management Bureau has introduced an alternative way of celebrating Valentine’s Day.

Dubbed “The Tree Hugging Campaign,” which originated with the Chipko Movement in the 1970s,  emphasizes the interdependence of humans and the environment.

DENR- Calabarzon Regional Executive Director Nilo B. Tamoria, together with his Assistant Regional Directors, Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Officers, has shown  solidarity by hugging native trees in various locations in the region.

The tree-hugging initiative is a five-day campaign, from February 14-18, that aims to promote social, as well as possible health benefits from nurturing our forest and the environment.

It also aims to raise awareness of the tree-hugging movement, as well as introduce an alternative way of spending Valentine’s Day.
