THE Department of Health (DOH) – Ilocos Region launched the Philippine Antimicrobial Awareness Week (PAAW) 2025 on November 14, 2025, with simultaneous activities in Pangasinan and La Union, bringing together more than 500 participants from rural health units, hospitals, national agencies, schools, and community groups.
This year’s celebration carries the theme: “Sama-samang Magtulungan upang Antimicrobial Resistance ay Mapigilan: AMR Bigyang Pansin, One Health Approach Pagtibayan.”
In Alaminos City, Pangasinan, the kickoff began with a motorcade from Lucap Wharf to the city proper, symbolizing unity in combating the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
While a lively “Zumbiotics” activity, an Ecowalk, and interactive games to reinforce responsible antimicrobial use and infection prevention was held simultaneously in Luna, La Union.
“AMR is a silent pandemic,” Assistant Regional Director Pretchell P. Tolentino stated as she emphasized the urgency of collaborative action.
“Antimicrobial resistance threatens every household and through proper education, active community participation, and coordinated action across sectors, we can protect everyone from preventable drug-resistant infections.”
She also highlighted the importance of the One Health Approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health systems in addressing AMR.
“The health of people, animals, and the environment are deeply interconnected. Strengthening this triad is key to ensuring that life-saving antibiotics remain effective for future generations.”
The week-long observance concluded on November 18, 2025, at the Speaker Pro-Tempore Francisco I. Ortega Convention Center in San Fernando City, La Union. Representatives from partner agencies and sectors reaffirmed their commitments to rational medicine use, enhanced infection control, and strengthened surveillance systems.
A poster-making contest showcasing creative advocacies against AMR also brought together students and young advocates, encouraging youth participation in public health awareness.
DOH Ilocos Region extended its appreciation to One Health partners, whose support contributed significantly to the week’s successful rollout.
Tolentino also noted the collective power of local stakeholders saying, “Our communities showed that progress is possible when we move together. This week’s activities proved that Ilocos Region is ready to confront AMR through unified, science-based action.”
As PAAW 2025 comes to a close, DOH Ilocos Region reiterates its commitment to sustained AMR advocacy, capacity-building, and policy support.
The DOH encourages all sectors to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting the health of communities across the Ilocos Region—ensuring a stronger, healthier future for generations to come.
