DEPUTY Speaker and Zambales 1st District Representative Jefferson Khonghun lauded the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for its steadfast commitment to defending the nation’s sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea, while strongly condemning China Coast Guard’s persistent incursions in Philippine waters.
On Friday, August 15, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela, clarified that a Chinese Coast Guard vessel recently spotted was not in Manila Bay but approximately 30 nautical miles from Zambales. Tarriela further revealed that China has deployed ships not only in Zambales but also in Pangasinan, Ilocos, and Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal), signaling an alarming pattern of aggression in Philippine waters.
“China’s Coast Guard has no place in our sovereign territory. Their persistent attempts to normalize their presence in Zambales and other parts of the West Philippine Sea are a direct affront to our national sovereignty and the rights of our people,” said Deputy Speaker Khonghun. “I commend the Philippine Coast Guard for their vigilance and dedication in defending our waters and protecting the livelihoods of our fishermen and coastal communities.”
Deputy Speaker Khonghun called for a rules-based international order, urging all nations to respect the Philippines’ rights in the West Philippine Sea as affirmed by the 2016 Arbitral Ruling. “We stand firm in asserting our official stance in the West Philippine Sea. The Philippines will not waver in protecting our territorial integrity and ensuring the safety and welfare of our people,” he added.
The Deputy Speaker expressed full support for the PCG’s efforts to counter China’s aggressive actions and ensure the security of Filipino fishermen and coastal communities. He reiterated the need for unity and decisive action to uphold the country’s rights in the face of growing challenges in the region.
