A HOUSE leader on Monday expressed skepticism about the possibility of Chinese cooperation in the investigation into alleged wiretapping activities of the Chinese Embassy in Manila.
In a press conference, House Assistant Majority Leader and La Union 1st District Rep. Francisco Paolo Ortega V cited the unfavorable treatment and communication handling by Chinese authorities towards the Philippines as reasons for his skepticism.
“Siguro pagputi na ang uwak, baka may tyansa po kasi with the way they (Chinese authorities) are treating us and the way they’re handling communications with the Philippines, parang ang hirap po talaga ng sitwasyon na ‘yun,” Ortega said in response to a media query.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recently confirmed his government’s investigation into the alleged wiretapping by the Chinese Embassy of a high-ranking official of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
The probe is linked to the purported “new model agreement” regarding the rotation and resupply mission in Ayungin Shoal, situated in the West Philippine Sea.
House Assistant Majority Leader and Zambales 1st District Rep. Jay Khonghun emphasized the crucial role of cooperation from the Chinese Embassy in the ongoing investigation, stressing the significance of uncovering the full truth behind the matter.
“Sa tingin ko po napakahalaga na makipagtulungan ang Chinese Embassy sa imbestigasyon para malaman natin ang buong katotohanan,” Khonghun said.
“Nakasalalay din dito ‘yung paglabas nila ng upang mabigyan ng linaw ‘yung napag-usapan nga ng AFP at ng Chinese diplomat kaugnay sa new model sa resupply mission sa Ayungin Shoal,” he added.
Acknowledging the early stage of the inquiry, Khonghun urged for patience in drawing conclusions and stressed the importance of understanding the nature of discussions between the parties involved.
Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua expressed alarm over reports of wiretapping, especially since it involves a foreign national.
He stressed the need for a thorough investigation to address the issue promptly and ensure national security.
”Kapag foreign national po ang gumawa nito, they could be subjected to deportation. Kaya mahalaga po na ito po talaga ay maimbestigahan,” Chua said.
Ortega, Khonghun and Chua also expressed their solidarity with the call of President Marcos to uncover the truth regarding the issue.
They also voiced their support for the President’s efforts in addressing the matter, underscoring the need for swift and decisive action to safeguard national security and sovereignty.
