THE House of Representatives on Wednesday closed May 2024 with a mass as a culmination of the Flores de Mayo festival.
In the Eucharistic celebration at the St. Thomas More Chapel at the Batasan Complex, Quezon City, mass presider Rev. Fr. Buddy Agualada, CMF, Institute for Consecrated Life in Asia, explained to the Catholic faithful that “a virgin is a person whose heart is not exhausted with the experiences of our daily life.”
According to the him, the Blessed Virgin Mary was chosen by God as the mother of His only begotten son because “she was virgin. St. Augustine used to say that long before Mary conceived Jesus in her womb, she had already been conceiving the word of God in her heart. God was for Mary, her first and last love. Her first and last beloved.”
May is traditionally considered as the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Flores de Mayo festival is the occasion when Filipinos show their gratitude and love for the Blessed Virgin Mary through prayers and floral offerings.
A group of children with an Ave Maria floral offering to the Blessed Virgin Mary’s image located at the altar was the highlight of the Wednesday mass. Other mass attendees also offered roses.
