Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya shares a “kanpai” with Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Ambassador Endo said he expects another high-level visit to Manila to further deepen Japan-Philippines security ties.
HOUSE Speaker Martin Romualdez cited the deepening strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan during the latter’s National Day celebration in Taguig City Thursday.
Romualdez underscored the significance of enhanced defense cooperation between the two nations, particularly with the recent ratification of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA).
The agreement allows the deployment of troops between the Philippines and Japan and the conduct of joint military exercises, humanitarian missions and disaster response.
“The Philippines and Japan continue to strengthen our partnership, built on shared values of democracy, economic progress, and regional security,” said the leader of the 306-strong House of Representatives.
“With the security environment in the region becoming more challenging, especially in our territorial seas, an enhanced defense cooperation with like-minded partners such as Japan remains vital in maintaining a secure and peaceful Indo-Pacific.”
The House leader described the RAA, ratified by the Philippine Senate in December 2024, as a major milestone in strengthening military collaboration between the two countries.
Apart from Speaker Romualdez, other high-ranking government officials, including Senate President Chiz Escudero and Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo attended the event hosted by Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya in honor of the 65th birthday of Japanese Emperor Naruhito.
During the event Ambassador Endo welcomed the stronger security cooperation, noting that upcoming high-level visits between the two countries would further solidify their defense ties.
The celebration also marked the growing cultural and economic relationship between the two nations, featuring traditional Japanese performances and cultural exhibits that reflect the strong people-to-people connections between Filipinos and Japanese.
Romualdez expressed optimism about the bright prospects for the Philippines-Japan partnership, particularly as both nations prepare to celebrate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026.
“We look forward to a strengthened strategic partnership with Japan as we move toward this historic milestone,” he said.
He noted that in response to evolving regional challenges, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, the Philippines and Japan have continued expanding their security cooperation.
With the RAA’s implementation, Romualdez said both countries are expected to enhance military interoperability and coordination, reinforcing their shared commitment to regional stability.
