THE Department of Health (DOH) – Ilocos Region today is urging the public to take the necessary precaution as cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) are developing across the region.
According to the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU), there are 8,842 ILI cases recorded from January 1, 2025- October 15, 2025. which indicates a significant decrease of 16.9 % during the same period last year with 10,605 cases.
The province with the greatest number of cases is Pangasinan with 2,960 followed by Ilocos Norte with 2,229, La Union – 1,762, Ilocos Sur – 1,345 and Dagupan City – 546.
While most cases are mild and manageable at home, health officials emphasize the importance of early detection, preventive measures, and responsible health practices to avoid further spread.
Among the top age groups that were affected were 1-4 years old with 2,694 cases and 5-9 years old with 1,654. There were no deaths reported.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and have activated intensified surveillance and response measures. We advise residents to remain vigilant, practice proper hygiene, and seek medical attention for flu-like symptoms,” Regional Director Paula Paz Sydiongco stated.
Influenza-like illness typically presents with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. Although common during the cooler months, a rapid rise in cases can strain healthcare systems and increase the risk of complications among vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and individuals with underlying health conditions.
Sydiongco likewise recommends the following precautionary measures to follow including regular handwashing with soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizers; avoiding close contact with people showing symptoms of illness, covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing; and wearing a face mask if experiencing symptoms or in crowded areas.
“For those who feel sick better stay home to prevent spreading the illness to others and consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen. Also ensure good ventilation in homes, schools, and workplaces. Influenza vaccination can also help Get vaccinated against influenza, especially high-risk groups”, she emphasized.
The regional office is also coordinating with local government units, schools, and health facilities to reinforce disease surveillance, ensure timely reporting, and distribute health advisories and vaccines.
“Prevention is always better than cure. We urge everyone to be proactive in protecting themselves and their families,” Dr. Sydiongco added.
For updates and advisories, residents are encouraged to follow the official DOH Ilocos Region Facebook page or contact the nearest health center.
