BATANGAS — THE City Government of Sto. Tomas has been recognized for its support of the Nick Joaquin Literary Award (NJLA)–LGU Advocacy for English Proficiency, an initiative aimed at promoting English literacy, reading, and appreciation of Filipino literature among young learners.
Under the leadership of Mayor Atty. Arth Jhun Aguilar Marasigan (AJAM) and Vice Mayor Catherine Jaurigue-Perez, the city government received a plaque of recognition during an event organized by Philippines Graphics on August 27, 2026, at Luxent Hotel.
The recognition highlights the local government’s support for programs that encourage English proficiency and literary appreciation among students, particularly through increased access to quality reading materials.
As part of the NJLA advocacy, public national high schools in Sto. Tomas City benefit from a literary magazine featuring short stories and poems in English written by both emerging and established Filipino writers and poets.
The initiative gives students an opportunity to read quality Filipino literature in English while helping strengthen their reading, writing, vocabulary, and language skills. It also aims to nurture a greater appreciation for literature and encourage young learners to engage more deeply with the written word.
The city government’s recognition reflects its continuing commitment to strengthening education and literacy while promoting cultural appreciation among the city’s youth.
Through its support for literary and educational initiatives such as the NJLA advocacy, the Sto. Tomas City Government continues to provide students with opportunities to discover literature, enhance their language abilities, and develop a lasting appreciation for reading and writing.
