THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has taken responsibility for the mix-up involving the remains of two Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who were killed in Beirut, Lebanon, and apologized to the bereaved families affected by the incident.
According to the DMW, the agency immediately took action to correct the error in the repatriation process.
It assured the families that all expenses related to the reprocessing and transportation of the remains would be fully covered to ensure that each OFW is returned to the correct family.
The DMW said it is closely coordinating with the relevant authorities in Lebanon and the families of the victims to facilitate the proper and swift transfer of the remains.
The agency has also launched a thorough investigation to determine how the mistake occurred and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The two OFWs were killed in Beirut on April 15 after they were allegedly taken hostage and shot by their employer.
The victims’ remains had already been repatriated to the Philippines when their families discovered that the identities of the bodies had been mistakenly switched.
Following the discovery, the DMW immediately moved to rectify the situation and provide the necessary assistance and support to the affected families.
The agency also appealed for understanding as it addresses the incident and strengthens its repatriation protocols to ensure that such mistakes do not happen again.
Meanwhile, the families continue to seek justice for the deaths of the two OFWs as Lebanese authorities pursue their investigation into the employer allegedly involved in the crime.
