IN celebration of this year’s 20th World Blood Donor Day, the Department of Health (DOH) – Ilocos Region led by the Regional Voluntary Blood Services Program staged a grand Zumba dance activity at the City Plaza Auditorium of San Fernando City in La Union on June 14, 2024.
The event entitled, “Zumba: Donate and Stay Fit with the Beat”, meant to create and raise awareness of the universal need for safe blood in the delivery of health care and the vital role it plays in achieving the goal of universal health coverage.
“Let us honor the everyday heroes who have selflessly given their blood without expecting in return. They have saved countless of lives, especially in our region, where our every blood donation activity has surpassed our targets and that is why marami tayong natutulungang mga pasyente,” Regional Director Paula Paz M. Sydiongco stated in her message during the opening program.
“I urge everyone to encourage others to voluntarily donate blood and for the regular donors to continue donating blood to ensure the sufficient supply and the quality and safety of blood and blood products for patients whose lives or wellbeing depend on blood transfusion.”
“My sincerest gratitude to all blood donors and those who continuously support our blood donation activities, especially our partner agencies and local government units,” Sydiongco emphasized.
Among the highlights of the event was the signing of the pledge of commitment by partner agencies to ensure a sustainable and safe blood collection for the region.
Also, a large human blood drop was formed by the 300+ Zumba participants to emphasized the importance of blood and blood products.
Among the partner agencies who attended the celebration were the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 1, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and the local government units (LGUs) of San Fernando City, La Union.
