Department of Health (DOH) – Ilocos Region has directed its campaign on road safety among high school students providing information and awareness on traffic laws, rules and regulations during the Road Safety Month Celebration held in Banna, Ilocos Norte with the theme, ‘Basta Driver, Road Safety Lover!’ which was participated by high school students of Banna National High School and Banna Academy, Inc. on May 22, 2025.
Regional Director Paula Paz M. Sydiongco stated that adolescents and young adults are already developing road-related habits, including driving and providing them the proper knowledge and skills will teach them responsible road behavior which will eventually lead to the reduction of road accidents and injuries.
“According to the recent vehicular incidents, human error is the major factor that causes vehicular accidents but it also meant to encompass broader issues including the driver’s behavior.
“Thatis why is important to regularly check your vehicles for roadworthiness and ensure that brakes, steering, and tires are in good condition, as well as checking fluid levels, lights, and other safety features before driving.”
“Every driver is responsible for his well-being and that of other motorists while driving. Kasama na dito ang ibang mga factors gaya ng pagiging aware sa kanyang surrondings, pagsunod sa traffic laws, and also operating the vehicle that he handles safely lalo na kung ito ay pampasahero and most important – don’t drink when you drive and avoid texting while driving,” she emphasized.
Sydiongco also encouraged partner agencies and stakeholders for the stricter implementation of road use, and especially in acquiring a driver’s license, to ensure that only qualified and responsible drivers are allowed on the road.
The DOH is the lead government agency for the road safety program in the country, and it has prioritized its implementation because road traffic injuries are a major public health concern and contribute significantly to deaths and injuries.
