Binuksan ng San Miguel Corporation (SMC) ang isang health clinic para mga kababaihan mula sa mahihirap na komunidad sa Tondo para tumulong na maiwasan ang panganib na magkasakit sa breast at cervical cancer.
Ayon kay SMC President and Chief Executive Officer Ramon S. Ang, ang naturang inisyatibo ay isinagawa sa gitna ng kinakaharap na dumaraming reproductive health issues ng mga kababaihan.
Ang women’s health clinic ay magbibigay ng serbisyo tulad ng obstetrics at gynecologic (OB-GYN) ultrasound, general ultrasound, at medical consultation para sa panganganak at female reproductive health para sa humigit-kumulang 400 na kababaihan na miyembro ng Better World Tondo community.
Ang naturang clinic ay matatagpuan sa SMC’s “Better World Tondo” community center na mayroon ring feeding, learning center at food bank. Mayroon rin dito regular na health education sessions para turuan ang kababaihan tungkol sa cancer prevention, pregnancy healthcare, at nutrition.
“For many women in poor communities, the needs of the family takes precedence over their own health. Instead of paying for healthcare, they might as well just buy food, pay for the rent, or buy school supplies. This is the unfortunate situation in which women find themselves in every day. That is why they may often postpone the diagnosis of a serious health problem. With this clinic, we hope to be able to provide women with the proper health care they need,” wika ni Ang.
“Apart from giving them access to free and specialized medical care and equipment, we will also work with medical experts to continuously guide them on how to prevent serious illnesses through early detection,” dagdag pa niya.
Bago pa man magbukas ang nasabing clinic at nagkaroon na survey ang SMC para sa 170 kababaihan sa komunidad ng BWT.
Napag-alaman sa nasabing survey na 30% sa mga respondents ang may may sakit sa reproductive health, kasama na dito ang breast and cervical cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), at myomas.
Maaari pang tumaas ang bilang ito kung mas maraming kababaihan ang magpapacheckup sa clinic.
Ang breast at cervical cancer ang nangungunang sanhi ng cancer para sa mga Pilipina. Ito ay ayon sa International Agency for Research on Cancer na isang ahensya sa ilalim ng World Health Organization.
Ang naturang ahensya ay naglista ng mga bagong kasi ng breast cancer na umaabot sa 27,163 at 7,897 na bagong kaso ng cervical cancer sa taong 2020.
Kasama sa mga miyembro ng BWT ang mga kasali sa after-school learning program, at mga volunteers sa center na tumutulong sa pagluluto at paglilinis.
Kasama rin na plano ng SMC ang family planning clinics sa mga barangay sa naturang lugar.
Ito ang ikalawang proyekto ng San Miguel para sa kababaihan. Binuksan rin ng SMC ang Better World Cubao (BWC) na a health, empowerment, and recovery (H.E.R.) center para sa mga kababaihan kasama na ang mga biktima ng domestic at sexual violence.
May workshops rin ang BWC tungkol sa gender equality, marriage, parenting, at building a sense of worth. Mayroon rin itong libreng health education sessions at reproductive health services sa mga karatig na komunidad.
