THREE House leaders asserted on Wednesday that the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) recommendation to charge Vice President Sara Duterte with inciting to sedition and grave threats significantly strengthens the impeachment case against her.
House Assistant Majority Leaders Jil Bongalon (Ako Bicol Party-list) and Ernix Dionisio (Manila), along with Deputy Majority Leader Paolo Ortega (La Union), emphasized that the NBI’s findings—stemming from Duterte’s alleged threats against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and other officials—could aid House prosecutors in securing a conviction.
House Leaders: NBI Findings Strengthen Case Against Duterte
“This is a positive development, particularly in relation to the impeachment case filed against the Vice President. The NBI’s findings confirm there is sufficient evidence to support charges of grave threats and inciting to sedition,” Bongalon said.
He added, “The NBI’s recommendation provides substantial support to the impeachment case, highlighting the severity of the allegations.”
Dionisio echoed this, stressing that the case underscores the need for accountability at the highest levels of government.
“The NBI’s move highlights the gravity of the accusations against VP Duterte. It is essential that all government officials, regardless of position, are held accountable under the law,” Dionisio stated.
Ortega reinforced the call for due process, asserting that the impeachment trial must be thorough and impartial.
“The NBI’s charges are serious and warrant a meticulous examination in the impeachment proceedings. Given the existence of live footage and other potential evidence, the claims cannot simply be denied,” Ortega remarked.
Impeachment Charges Gain Momentum
The NBI’s recommendation is based on statements allegedly made by VP Duterte in November 2024, where she reportedly implied that she would order an assassin to target President Marcos and his family if harm befell her. Duterte has denied the allegations, claiming her remarks were taken out of context.
The impeachment complaint against Duterte includes accusations of corruption, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes. The NBI’s findings add weight to these allegations, potentially influencing the Senate’s proceedings.
“This is a pivotal moment for our nation’s commitment to justice and the rule of law. The evidence must be scrutinized thoroughly to ensure that the truth prevails,” Dionisio emphasized.
Ortega concluded, “Our duty is to uphold the Constitution and ensure that any violations are addressed appropriately. The NBI’s recommendation is a crucial step in this process.”
