By Justine Rich Talusan

SOME parts of Mindanao are experiencing power interruption after a transmission tower in Lanao del Norte was bombed on Monday afternoon.

A report from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said unidentified suspects used improvised explosive devices to bomb Tower No. 8 at Sitio San Isidro in Bgy. Bagombayan, Kauswagan, causing it to fall.

The incident forced the NGCP to implement  rotational brownout to prevent overloading of the remaining line.

Among the affected areas are the entire Zamboanga Peninsula namely Zamboanga del Norte (including Dipolog City and Dapitan City), Zamboanga del Sur (including Pagadian City and Zamboanga City), Zamboanga Sibugay, the entire Misamis Occidental and parts of Lanao del Norte.

The NGCP said the blast caused NGCP’s Baloi-Aurora 138kV Transmission Line to trip at 4:50 p.m. Monday.

“Responding authorities confirmed that lawless elements used IEDs to bomb the tower. The incident is under investigation,” the company statement read.

The NGCP said bombings of their towers only add burden to the public who suffer through power interruptions.

It warned that suspicious activities, which may disrupt the transmission of power is punishable by law, with a penalty of as much as P200,000 or 12 years imprisonment, or both.

Law enforcers and the military are securing the blast area as repair works are ongoing.
