THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has apprehended approximately ₱3 million worth of undocumented used clothes (ukay-ukay) at Matnog Port, Sorsogon, yesterday, 11 January 2024.
While conducting a paneling inspection, the PCG K9 team noticed bundles of used clothes (ukay-ukay) on board the vehicle.
Upon inquiry, the driver failed to present pertinent documents relative to the legality of the said items.
The PCG confiscated the items as the driver violated Republic Act No. 4653 or an act to safeguard the health of the people and maintain the dignity of the nation by declaring it a national policy to prohibit the importation of textile articles commonly known as used clothing and rags.
The PCG turned the confiscated used clothes over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for investigation and proper disposition.
