REPRESENTATIVE Camille Villar has filed House Bill No. 10696 seeking to extend the validity of the original and renewed certificates of registration of motor vehicles from their current validity period.
Villar said the proposed “Extended Motor Vehicle Registration Act of 2024,” would save car and motorcycle owners time and resources in renewing the registration of their motor vehicles annually.
“I recognize the predicament of motor vehicle owners who troop to Land Transportation Office (LTO) renewal centers every year to renew their motor vehicle registrations. This annual occurrence entails the use of precious time and resources, both financial and non-financial, by millions of motor vehicle owners,” she said.
The lawmaker from Las Piñas City said the measure, once enacted, would help motor vehicle owners save on costs, time and energy from having to renew the certificates of registration of their motor vehicles every year.
Villar also said the measure would lessen government’s administrative costs in handling the annual registrations.
Under HBN 10696, the proposed validity of the certificates of registration for brand-new motor vehicles shall be five years, and three years for brand-new motorcycles.
The initial motor vehicle registration under the current system is valid for three years, after which the car registration renewal should be done every year. On the other hand, a new motorcycle’s initial registration is limited to one year.
For the renewal of certificates of registration, HB 10696 proposes a three-year validity period for motor vehicles aged five to seven years; two years for eight to nine years; and one year for 10 years and above.
The renewal of certificates of registration for motorcycles aged three to seven years would be two years; and for eight years and above, one year.
