THE municipality of Subic remained largely free from widespread flooding despite days of heavy rainfall brought by the southwest monsoon, enhanced by Typhoon Inday, with local officials attributing the outcome to the sustained flood mitigation initiatives implemented by Zambales First District Representative Jay Khonghun and the Subic local government headed by Mayor Jonathan “Jon” Khonghun.
Among the areas that did not experience flooding were the villages of Sto. Tomas, San Isidro, Cawag, Naugsol, Ilwas, Asinan Proper, Aningway, and Manggahan, which had previously been among the most flood-prone communities during periods of heavy rainfall.
The sustained desilting and deepening of rivers in Manggahan, Ilwas, and Sacatihan, along with the extensive cleaning of creeks, esteros, and drainage canals across various barangays, significantly improved water flow and helped prevent rivers from overflowing.
The Subic LGU had earlier assured residents that, whether during La Niña or El Niño, it would continue implementing disaster preparedness and flood control measures aimed at protecting the lives and livelihoods of Subiqueños.
Residents also expressed their gratitude for the local government’s proactive and continuous efforts even before the onset of the rainy season. Many said they no longer had to evacuate or worry about sudden flooding despite the intense rains brought by the recent weather disturbance.
