
TWO strong quakes on Sunday night hit off Surigao del Sur, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
According to Phivolcs, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck east of Bayabas town in Surigao Del Sur at 6:24 p.m. on Sunday.
The agency first measured the quake at magnitude 6.1 but downgraded it later.
The epicenter of the tremor was in the waters some 49 kms. northeast off Bayabas municipality.
An hour later, Phivolcs reported another magnitude 5.8 earthquake in the same area, but again downgraded it to 5.4.
Phivolcs said the quakes were tectonic in origin.
Intensity 4 was recorded in Bayabas, Cantilan, and Tandag City in Surigao Del Sur while intensity 3 in Rosario and San Agustin towns in Agusan Del Sur.
Intensity 2 was felt in Surigao City, Surigao Del Norte and intensity 1 in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.
There was no reported injury nor damage to property.
