Village chief, wife killed in Cebu town ambush

RIDING-IN-TANDEM gunmen on Tuesday shot dead a barangay captain and his wife in a gun attack in Asturias, Cebu.

Asturias police chief Maj. Alden Zambrano identified the victims as Manguiao barangay captain Mario Delfin Tundag, 57, and his wife Edna, 49, of Manguiao, Asturias town.

The couple were traveling on a motorcycle when upon reaching Bgy. Poblacion, they were shot by armed men on another motorbike.

According to police, the suspects were apparently tailing the victims and when they got a chance, shot the Tundags before fleeing towards Balamban area.

An investigation showed the couple the were on their way home from the neighboring Balamban town when ambushed.

Police are eyeing politics as motive for the killing.

The Cebu Police Provincial Office immediately launched a manhunt for the killers.

The killing of Tundag occurred few months before the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on October 30, this year.
