SIX towns in the northern part of Quezon were placed under a state of calamity following the devastation brought by super typhoon “Karding”
The Quezon Provincial Legislative Board headed by Quezon Vice Gov. Anacleto Alvala III on Tuesday afternoon unanimously passed a resolution declaring the towns of Polillo, Patnanungan, Panukulan, Jomalig, Burdeos and Gen. Nakar under a state of calamity.
The declaration was in response to the urgent request of Quezon Gov. Angelina “Helen” Tan who immediately visited the five island municipalities and a coastal town hours after “Karding” left the province on Monday night.
According to Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council head Melchor Avenilla Jr., as of Tuesday, the initial total damage wrought by typhoon “Karding” in the affected areas is worth P186,567,672, affecting 16,439 crop and coconut farmers.
Avenilla said the typhoon also destroyed some 27,640 coconut trees worth P25,810,073 and about 2,878 hectares of fruit-bearing trees, involving 3,376 farmers, with loss estimate at about P30,233,144.
Damage to rice and corn covered 2,923 hectares, involving 3,181 farmers, and losses are estimated at P190,463,760.
Displaced and evacuated individuals have reached 50,435 or 13,961 families covering 31,701 persons in the 1st district; 1,261 in the 2nd district; 8,986 in the 3rd district and 8,487 in the 4th district.
Provincial Social Welfare and Development officer Sonia Leyson reported to the Board members that P10,000 cash assistance will be provided to the families with totally damaged houses and P5,000 to families with partially-damaged houses.
