SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Sunday expressed profound gratitude to the leadership of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for granting royal clemency to 115 Filipino nationals, calling it a remarkable act of compassion and a testament to the strong ties between the Philippines and the UAE.
Speaker Romualdez conveyed the appreciation of the House of Representatives and the entire Filipino nation to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, for the pardon granted during the sacred season of Ramadan and the upcoming Eid Al-Fitr.
“This singular act of compassion is a powerful expression of the UAE’s enduring commitment to justice tempered by mercy. It reflects the strength of humanitarian values that lie at the heart of Islam, and the magnanimity of a leadership that extends forgiveness and hope in a time of spiritual renewal,” Speaker Romualdez said.
The leader of the 306-strong legislative chamber added that the gesture brings not only relief to those released but also hope to their families awaiting their return to the Philippines.
“We Filipinos will not forget this gesture of goodwill. It brings comfort and healing not only to those who have been granted clemency, but to their families and loved ones back home who now look forward to reunion and redemption. It is a gesture that restores dignity and reaffirms our shared belief in second chances,” Speaker Romualdez said.
Speaker Romualdez also emphasized that the act further strengthens the close ties between the Philippines and the UAE.
“This act also strengthens the abiding friendship between the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates—one built over decades of mutual respect, cooperation, and solidarity,” he said.
The Speaker noted that the UAE continues to be a gracious host to over half a million Filipinos, many of whom contribute significantly to the Gulf nation’s economy and society.
“The UAE has long been a gracious host to over half a million Filipinos who contribute meaningfully to your society and economy. Your continued support for their welfare, rights, and dignity speaks volumes of the values that bind our two nations,” he pointed out.
He concluded by expressing hope that the UAE’s act of clemency would inspire others to choose peace, kindness, and compassion, especially in this time of spiritual reflection.
“As we mark this season of reflection and unity, may this act of clemency inspire us all to pursue peace, extend kindness, and affirm our common humanity,” Speaker Romualdez said.
