The Philippine National Police (PNP) investigators are closely looking at the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a mayoral candidate in Calamba town, Misamis Occidental.
The attack took place last March 13 when the Calamba Municipal Police Station responded to the shooting incident in barangay Southwestern Poblacion victimizing a certain George Matunog Jr.
Initial investigation disclosed that while the victim was walking towards his residence from a convenience store, a motor-riding assailant suddenly stopped and shot the victim hitting Matunog Jr. in his right cheek. He was immediately brought to Calamba District Hospital for immediate medical treatment.
He was able to escape death and is now in a stable condition.“Our police personnel immediately conducted a hot pursuit operation to search for the gunman who, according to witness’ account, was wearing a yellow jacket at that moment,” PNP Chief General Dionardo Carlos said.
While it’s early to conclude that this is politically motivated, the PNP includes politics as a possible motive considering that the victim is a poll bet.“
The campaign for the local candidates is drawing near, so we have to re-examine the political climate in Calamba town and all other LGUs. But for now, investigators are still gathering more evidence, including the testimony from the victim,” Carlos said.
