THE Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday said it will conduct an investigation into the alleged special treatment on Marvin Miranda, one of the suspected masterminds behind the assassination of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo.
Miranda is detained at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Manila.
“We have received reports regarding this matter, and it is something that we definitely need to examine. We have had reports since the beginning that he has taken money,” according to DOJ spokesperson Mico Clavano.
“We don’t want to jump to conclusions prematurely. We must ensure that the investigation explores this angle as well,” Clavano added.
According to Clavano, the DOJ received information suggesting that Miranda was able to leave the NBI detention center and enjoy unspecified privileges.
“We are receiving numerous reports. Therefore, we need to thoroughly assess everything before pointing fingers or making definitive statements about the truth of this situation,” Clavano explained.
Clavano said they have already held discussions on the matter with NBI Director Medardo De Lemos, who has expressed willingness to put an end to the alleged practice of granting perks to inmates.
Earlier, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla attributed the recruitment of the assassins involved in the deadly operation to Miranda.
Remulla compared the roles of provincial solon Arnolfo Teves and Miranda in Degamo’s assassination to those of an executive producer and a director/casting director in a movie production.
