A 90-YEAR-OLD woman and her son were killed in a fire that destroyed their house in Gattaran, Cagayan.
Lt. Romel Ramos, deputy chief of police of the Gattaran Municipal Police Station, identified the victims as Marcelina Bernardo and her son Roger, 60, of Bgy. Centro, Gattaran municipality.
According to witnesses, the mother and her son managed to leave the house when the fire started but Marcelina went back inside to get their lot title.
When the old woman failed to get out, Roger returned to the house to save her but both the mother and her son were trapped by the raging blaze.
Responding firefighters from the Lallo, Lasam, Gattaran and Camalaniugan Fire Stations put out the fire that reached second alarm.
The charred body of Marcelina was found on the second floor of the house while her son’s remains were discovered inside the bathroom on the ground floor.
Authorities theorized an abandoned lighted candle caused the fire. The old woman used to light a candle every time she prayed the rosary.
The fire also partially damaged the house of retired teacher Eleanor Ursua.
