POLICE arrested a Grade 10 student for bringing a grenade to a school in Talisay City, Negros Occidental last Tuesday.
A pedicab driver who was threatened by the young suspect reported the incident to the barangay officials.
According to the pedicab driver, the student threatened to hit him on the head with the explosive when he refused to bring him to Rafael B. Lacson Memorial High School in Talisay City.
As soon as the barangay got the information, the officials immediately contacted the Talisay City Police Station.
The barangay captain called the principal to inform her of the incident and cautioned her of the presence of the young suspect in the school.
Members of the Philippine National Police immediately searched for the learner until they found him in his classroom.
Police inspected his bag, where they recovered dried marijuana leaves and a tooter.
Authorities also did a body search on him and found the hand grenade hidden in his underwear.
As part of the police emergency protocol, the other students in the area were evacuated to the parking lot to ensure their safety.
Classes were suspended due to the incident.
The Grade 10 student was arrested and is now in the custody of the Talisay City Police Station.
The Department of Education – Schools Division of Negros Occidental strongly condemned the incident involving the Grade 10 student.
The provincial school division office reassured learners, parents, staff members and other stakeholders that it is taking the incident very seriously and that the safety and security of everyone in the school community are its top priority.
It added that it will provide all the necessary assistance to bring back normalcy in the school, including the conduct of psychosocial support interventions for those traumatized by the incident.
According to Talisay City Police Station deputy chief of police Capt. Abegael Donasco, the arrested student is facing charges for illegal possession of explosives and violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
