Magnitude 6.3 quake jolts Calatagan, Batangas

A MAGNITUDE 6.3 earthquake jolted Calatagan in Batangas on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs officer in charge Teresito Bacolcol said the earthquake was caused by the movement of the Manila Trench.

The tectonic quake struck 15 km. southwest of Calatagan, Batangas at 10:19 a.m.

It was 119 km. deep, and Phivolcs said no tsunami is expected due to its depth.

Intensity IV was felt in Manila City; Mandaluyong City; Quezon City; Valenzuela City; City of Malolos in Bulacan; Batangas City, Ibaan, Lemery, Nasugbu, and Talisay, all in Batangas; City of Dasmariñas, and City of Tagaytay, Cavite; and Tanay in Rizal.

Intensity III was reported in Pateros;City of Las Piñas; Makati City; Marikina City; Parañaque City; Pasig City; Obando, Bulacan; Laurel, Batangas; City of Bacoor, and City of Imus, Cavite; City of San Pablo, and City of San Pedro, Laguna; San Mateo, Rial.

Intensity II was felt in Caloocan City; San Juan City; Muntinlupa City; City of San Fernando, La Union; City of Alaminos, and Bolinao, Pangasinan; Santa Maria, Bulacan; Bamban, Tarlac.

Intensity I was felt in the City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan.

Phivolcs said both aftershocks and damage are expected from the earthquake. (PNA)
