THE National Press Club of the Philippines (NPC) has extended “cash assistance” to members in the SOCCSKSARGEN region following the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the Sarangani coast.
Rose Tamayo, head of NPC’s Visayas and Mindanao Affairs, personally delivered the aid on Thursday, June 18, to journalists in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, Koronadal City and General Santos City.
In an interview with the Weekly Informer, Tamayo said frontline media workers are balancing their own hardships with the critical task of delivering accurate and timely information to communities during the disaster.
“It’s small but meaningful help — the NPC’s way of standing with them in times of disaster,” she said.
Tamayo, who also chipped in her own money for the initiative, noted that a total of 32 journalists have benefited from the assistance. The support also covers non-members, retired media practitioners, and a person with disability journalist based in General Santos City.
She emphasized that backing media workers ensures the steady flow of reliable information — a key element in community recovery and safety.
Tamayo emphasized their “small help” demonstrates the NPC’s commitment. She said, “when our colleagues require support, we are ready to offer it,” adding that ensuring their safety and welfare are as important as the vital work they perform for the country.
