PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Saturday expressed his deep appreciation for the contributions of the Philippine Army during both combat and peacetime.
Speaking at the 128th founding anniversary of the Philippine Army at its headquarters in Taguig City, President Marcos lauded the Army’s commitment to national defense, constitutional integrity, and public safety.
“As we mark the 128th Founding Anniversary, we are again reminded why we choose to serve. We do it not for ourselves, but also for the countless generations that will come after us,” President Marcos said.
The President said soldiers should be recognized not only for their courage but also for their resilience when facing challenges.
“Kinakailangan ang [paninindigang] hindi natitinag sa harap ng pagsubok, ang prinsipyong hindi nababaluktot ng takot o pangamba, at ang pusong laging handa maglingkod nang tapat at walang hinihintay na kapalit,” the President said.
The President said soldiers should consider the greater good, irrespective of rank and power.
“Ang tunay na sukatan ay ang kahandaang na isantabi ang sariling interes para [sa] mas mataas na layunin. Bagama’t iba iba tayo ng papel na ginagampanan, dapat mangibabaw ang ating adhikaing bumuo ng mas nagkakaisa, mas makatarungan, at tunay na mapayapang bansa,” he said.
The President likewise praised the Army’s excellence, demonstrated by its high scores in policy and facility assessments during the General Security of Military Information Agreement evaluation.
He stressed the significance of leadership, integrity, and unity in creating a stronger and more peaceful Philippines.
While the Army has consistently addressed various security issues, it should adapt to evolving security challenges, including cyber threats, he also said.
“Every Filipino wants their children to grow up in a country where they are safe, where they have access to quality education, and where they can build a future that has opportunities awaiting,” the President said.
Recently, 6,000 troops participated in the second round of the Combined Arms Training Exercise (CATEX Katihan) to enhance the Army’s combat readiness and improve its capability to respond effectively to any threat.
The President said the government’s efforts will reinforce the Army’s welfare programs because “those who dedicate their lives to serve the country must be supported.”
Other programs for the Army include the Mandatory Annual Physical Examination, Reimbursement of Hospital Expenses, and MOWEL Support for Wounded-in-Action Personnel, along with streamlined processes to ensure faster access to benefits.
The President has issued Executive Order No. 84, increasing the subsistence allowance of all officers and personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
“These efforts are part of a broader vision: a nation where Filipinos no longer need to worry about their safety, where they can build a more dignified lives for themselves and for their families,” he said.
President Marcos also commended Army Chief Lt. Gen. Roy Galido for upholding a standard of excellence that marks the Philippine Army’s worth of people’s trust and respect.
“As your Commander-in-Chief, I enjoin you to stay relentless in your pursuit for excellence. Sharpen your skills, master your craft, embrace innovation,” the President said.
“After all, the Philippine Army’s strength extends beyond firepower. It draws from its personnel’s honor, integrity, and fortitude,” he added.
