JUSTICE Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla yesterday said the killing of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo may have involved at least two masterminds .
“We don’t think there is only one mastermind here. It’s a conspiracy and there could be two or three possible conspirators. One person alone cannot execute a conspiracy, it takes a few people to accomplish a dark plan,” Remulla told radio station DZRH.
The Justice secretary declined to disclose the names of the alleged conspirators, pending the results of the investigation but he was certain that the politically-motivated killing was meticulously planned.
“We cannot reveal identities yet but definitely this incident has something to do with politics. The planning, execution, and everything involved is beyond words,” Remulla said.
The killing occurred when Degamo was meeting beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) at his residence in Pamplona town.
Heavily armed suspects wearing camouflage uniforms shot Degamo. Eight other were also killed in the attack.
Pursuit operations by police and military units resulted in the arrest of three suspects, including two former military members.
Degamo won a fiercely contested gubernatorial race in his province, and his assassination occurred only 19 days after the Supreme Court declared him the winner.
