REPRESENTATIVE Ann Matibag of the First District of Laguna welcomed the key points raised by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), calling for greater focus on national security, flood control programs, and improvements in public school infrastructure.
Stronger Security in the West Philippine Sea
Rep. Matibag emphasized the need for firmer policies and actions in safeguarding Philippine sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.
“Well, I expect to have more secure na security sa West Philippine Sea na mga protocol na mga nangyayari sa ating bansa,” she said.
Flood Control Programs Urged for Laguna and Other Areas
The lawmaker also drew attention to recurring flood issues, particularly in San Pedro, Laguna, where she previously served.
“Ang problema natin sa Laguna, sana ay mas tututukan yung flood. Sa mga flood control program, dapat imbestigahan dahil sa amin po sa San Pedro ay yearly lang nangyayari,” she stressed.
Public School Infrastructure Needs
She likewise underscored the importance of prioritizing the construction and rehabilitation of public school facilities.
“At siyempre we would also encourage yung creation and rehabilitation sa mga schools, sa mga public schools,” Rep. Matibag added.
On Tariff Adjustments
On the topic of tariffs, Rep. Matibag clarified that the recent increase is relatively modest and remains beneficial to government revenues.
“Actually before, ang Philippines po ay 17% ang ating tariff tax. So tumaas lamang siya ng 2%—so from 17 to 19—so malaking bagay pa rin naman po sa ating revenues dahil sa 2 points lamang ang ating itinaas,” she explained.
Legislative Agenda: 10 Priority Bills
Rep. Matibag also shared updates on her legislative work, revealing that several of her proposed House Bills reached the third reading before Congress went on recess.
“I have bills po na inabutan po ng recess, so I just have to refilling dahil nakaabot na po siya sa 3rd reading, so hopefully half of it,” she concluded.
