AKO-Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co has announced his resignation as Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, citing health concerns as the reason behind his decision to step down from the demanding post.
In a statement, Rep. Co expressed gratitude to the majority in Congress for accepting his decision, noting that his role has taken a toll on his well-being, prompting him to seek necessary medical attention.
“This decision, made with a heavy heart, is driven by pressing health concerns. The highly demanding nature of my role has taken its toll, and I now need to prioritize seeking the medical attention necessary for my well-being,” Co said.
Serving as chair of the influential committee, Co played a key role in crafting the national budget, ensuring alignment with the administration’s economic agenda. Over the past three years, he championed various initiatives, including the Ayuda sa Kapos ang Kita Program, which provides vital assistance to low-income families.
“I am deeply honored to have been entrusted with the immense responsibility of steering the nation’s budget in service of the House of the people and the constituents we represent,” he stated.
Co also highlighted his work in securing funding for health, housing, and food security programs, including investments in legacy hospitals and contract farming initiatives. He proudly sponsored and guided the approval of the national budgets for 2023, 2024, and 2025.
As he steps away from his leadership post, Co expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation. “Thank you for this extraordinary privilege to serve,” he said.
Co’s resignation marks the end of his tenure at the helm of one of Congress’ most critical committees, leaving a legacy of budgetary reforms and social support programs. His successor has yet to be announced.
