MARIKINA 2nd District Representative Miro Quimbo on Wednesday reaffirmed his support for the passage of the proposed universal social pension for senior citizens, especially as the country faces challenges stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Quimbo attended the ceremonial turnover of nearly 18,000 signatures from senior citizens in Marikina in support of a campaign to gather 1 million signatures, which proponents hope to present to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“Today, I think, is the most opportune time for the government to finally carry out and enact this law. Kung tayo po ay naghahanap pa ng iba’t ibang mga batas o hakbang para makatulong sa ating mga kababayan, lalo ngayon sa panahon ng krisis, ito na po marahil ang isa sa very concrete steps that the President can take to help our countrymen, especially our senior citizens,” Quimbo said.
United Senior Citizens Partylist Representative Milagros Aquino Magsaysay, chairperson of the House Committee on Senior Citizens, urged her colleagues to collect more signatures in support of this measure.
”Ginagawa namin lahat ng makakaya namin para sa ganon ay maihabol sana bago kami magbakasyon para pumunta na sa Senado…pagtratrabahuhan namin,” Magsaysay said.
Quimbo previously pointed out that only a limited number of senior citizens receive pensions from the Social Security System or the Government Service Insurance System. He noted that many older Filipinos remain contributors to household expenses despite having little or no regular income.
For the veteran lawmaker, a universal pension would provide greater financial security for senior citizens as they age.
Last December 2025, the House Special Committee on Senior Citizens approved the committee report and substitute bill for the proposed universal social pension
