THE Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) yesterday said there was another incident of alleged hazing death in Cebu before the death of Adamson student John Matthew Salilig.
PAO chief attorney Persida Acosta identified the victim in Cebu as Ronnel M. Baguio, a 20-year-old Marine Engineering student from Bataan studying in Cebu.
Baguio’s mother, Leny, sought the help of the PAO to investigate the death of her son.
Baguio was allegedly “sponsored” by one of his instructors to join a fraternity, the Tau Gamma Phi, and the initiation rites occurred on December 10, 2022.
According to Baguio’s mother, she received a message from his son on December 17, 2022, asking for medicines for urinary tract infections, stomach pain, and headaches. She advised him to have himself checked up.
The following day, Baguio informed his mother that he had vomited with blood, and she re-advised him to see a doctor.
After sending money for her son’s medical check-up, Leny attempted to contact him again, but a friend answered and informed her that he was hospitalized.
When she flew to Cebu, she discovered that her son had already died.
The mother said she observed wounds on his son’s legs and swelling on his foot, indications of hazing.
