BATANGAS CITY — Media organizations in Batangas joined counterparts across the country in celebrating World Press Freedom Day through a virtual forum that underscored the media’s vital role in ensuring truthful, credible news coverage, especially in the lead-up to the 2025 national elections.
With the theme “Media and the Public: Partners in Delivering Truthful News for the 2025 Elections,” the event was spearheaded by the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) in partnership with regional Media Councils, including the Batangas Press Club (BPC) and the Batangas Media Council. The nationwide gathering served as a unified stand for press freedom, media responsibility, and the fight against disinformation.
Highlighting the challenges faced by journalists today, speakers tackled the rising impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the news landscape. While AI holds potential for efficiency and innovation, concerns were raised over its use in spreading disinformation, further complicating the battle against fake news.
BPC President Jonald Medina Rayos emphasized the need for responsible journalism in the age of AI, noting that the integrity and vigilance of reporters remain essential in ensuring that emerging technologies serve the truth, rather than distort it.
As part of the forum, participating media practitioners and council members signed a covenant for free, safe, and responsible journalism. The pledge affirms their shared commitment to uphold press freedom, ensure public safety in reporting, and deliver factual, verified news, especially as the country gears up for another critical electoral season.
World Press Freedom Day, observed annually every May, honors the indispensable role of a free press in fostering democratic societies and informed citizenries.
