FOUR community-based associations in Batangas province, consisting of farmers, fisherfolk, women, and marginalized groups, received 20 multi-purpose solar drying trays (Portasols) worth Php 730,000.00 from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-CALABARZON through the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO)-Batangas, December 12.
The 20 Portasols were distributed to the following associations: six sets to Nagkakaisang Samahan ng mga Kababaihan ng Quizumbing in Calaca City for fish drying; six sets to Kuyug Sustainable Livelihood Program Association in Calatagan for fish drying; five sets to Kilusan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda sa Lawa ng Taal in MataasnaKahoy for fish drying; and three sets to Batangas Cacao Growers Association for drying cacao.

Portasol was designed to improve drying efficiency, reduce spoilage of crops, and enhance product quality and economic impact. It features 12 stackable, portable thermal drying trays that can handle up to 150 kilograms of crops such as rice, corn, beans, vegetables, fruits, and fish per drying session. Given its portability, it allows beneficiaries to dry more crops in smaller spaces with limited storage facilities. It also prevents pest infestation and promotes proper ventilation between layers, reducing the risk of fungal mold, rot, and mildew. Developed by Filipino inventor-entrepreneur Francisco Pagayon, Portasol is now gaining attention across various regions in the country.
Beneficiary associations thanked DOST-CALABARZON and PSTO-Batangas for the Portasols they received. According to them, the Portasols will enhance their drying processes and help ensure the safety and quality of their products.
This distribution of Portasols is part of DOST’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods and improve the economic well-being of local communities through science, technology, and innovation.
