AN unidentified gunman on Wednesday shot dead a female school principal in her home in Polangui, Albay.
Killed was Beverly Cabaltera, 53, principal of Pio Duran National High School.
The victim was killed in her home in Napoville Subdivision, Bgy. Napo, Polangui town.
The family of Cabaltera told police that they were awakened by a gunshot from the bedroom of the victim at 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
They immediately checked and were shocked to see Cabaltera bloodied and lying unconscious on the floor near the window.
The school principal had a bullet wound on her neck.
Cabaltera died while being taken to the Isip General Hospital in the town center.
Recovered at the crime scene was one empty shell of a fired cartridge of unknown caliber.
The Department of Education strongly condemned the killing of Cabaltera.
“We condemn this act of violence against our teacher. We are deeply saddened of this tragic incident,” the DepEd Region 5, in a statement, said.
“We are hoping that the swift and appropriate action of the local PNP will bring justice to the death of our personnel,” the Department added.
DepEd Region 5 ordered the Schools Division Suuperintendent of Albay to speak with local authorities and the immediate family of the victim for any assistance DepEd can offer.
