OFW Party List Rep. Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino met with the family of Mary Jane Veloso on Friday (Jan. 31), reaffirming her commitment to advocating for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families, as well as pushing for clemency for Mary Jane.
Mary Jane’s parents, Celia and Cesar Veloso, along with her siblings, Darlene Veloso Cando and Maritess Veloso Laurente, traveled from their province to Mandaluyong to visit her at the Correctional Institute for Women.
While the family is in Manila, Rep. Magsino took the opportunity to meet with them, listening to their concerns and offering reassurance of continued support.
“Ipinapakita ng sitwasyon ni Mary Jane ang panganib na kinakaharap ng maraming OFWs. Pero nandito kami para sa ibang OFW at kay Mary Jane. We will continue to stand by her and provide the necessary support for her and her family,” Magsino said.
The Veloso family expressed their gratitude for the continuous assistance being extended by the OFW Party List and the ongoing attention to Mary Jane’s case.
Veloso, who was sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug trafficking, has consistently maintained that she was a victim of human trafficking.
Her execution was halted in 2015 following intense public and diplomatic efforts. Now back in the Philippines, she remains in custody as she awaits a possible pardon.
Rep. Magsino delivered a privilege speech last week on the plight of incarcerated OFWs and repeated her appeal for executive clemency for Mary Jane Veloso.
The lawmaker also reiterated the OFW Party List’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers, particularly those who have fallen victim to trafficking and exploitation.
