Panel formed to probe Teves over Degamo murder

By Justine Rich Talusan

A TEAM of prosecutors tasked to conduct preliminary investigation into the numerous murder complaints filed against Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. in connection with the assassination of provincial governor Roel Degamo and several other individuals was created by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

According to Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Richard Anthony Fadullon, subpoenas have already been sent to Teves and five other individuals.

The purpose of the subpoenas is to allow the accused the opportunity to contest the charges filed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on behalf of the victims’ families.

Five individuals, including Teves, were charged before the DOJ over the murder of Degamo and several others on March 4.

Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento affirmed the charges against the five respondents. However, no specific details regarding their identities or the extent of their involvement in the widely publicized daytime massacre have been disclosed thus far.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla recently mentioned a range of allegations, including murder, multiple frustrated murder, multiple murder, and multiple attempted murder.

Teves consistently denied any involvement in the killing of Degamo and said he will return to the Philippines once his personal safety concerns are adequately addressed.
