THE House prosecution panel still trusts the impeachment process and that the senator-judges will abide by their constitutional duty when the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte actually begins.
“We trust the process of impeachment. We (also) trust that the senator-judges will perform their constitutional duty and abide by their oath,” prosecution panel spokesperson Atty. Antonio Bucoy said in a press conference on Friday.
He underscored the importance of trusting the process to the preservation of the social order.
“Kung hindi tayo magtitiwala sa proseso, there will be chaos. We are a democracy. We are governed by rules. We are governed by law. Kung mawawalang bisa ang batas, there will be chaos. There should be order. Kaya nandiyan ang batas for order. Kaya ho rule of law is primordial,” Bucoy said.
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero had been quoted earlier stating that the impeachment court has no limits on what it can or cannot decide, saying “everything is possible.” He claimed that the impeachment court could even vote on Vice President Sara Duterte’s fate without hearing evidence.
Bucoy admitted that the prosecutors cannot stop the senator-judges from doing so.
In such a scenario, Bucoy pointed out that the matter may be raised to the Supreme Court.
“Ang recourse namin … pag nangyari yan, maaring umakyat kami sa Supreme Court. Wala tayong magagawa kung mas matagal siya, nandiyan na yung sitwasyon, hindi naman pwedeng tanggapin na lang natin,” he explained.
He nonetheless remains optimistic that the senator-judges will do what is right according to their judgment, “Hopefully hindi tayo aabot doon,” Bucoy said.
