THE Department of Health (DOH) – Ilocos Region, in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Dagupan City, successfully conducted a “Libreng Eye Check-up, Eyeglasses Distribution, Cholesterol Screening, and Random Blood Sugar Testing” for more than 300 senior citizens, reaffirming its commitment to making essential health services more accessible for the elderly.
The initiative forms part of the region’s continuing advocacy to expand comprehensive, age-friendly health services and also to celebrate “Elderly Filipino Week 2025 which was held at the Dagupan City People’s Astrodome on November 18, 2025.
“This activity demonstrates our unwavering commitment to ensuring that our lolo and lola receive the quality care they deserve,” Regional Director Paula Paz M. Sydiongco stated.
“Vision problems, hypertension, and diabetes are common concerns among older adults, and early detection can prevent serious complications. Through these free services, we hope to help our seniors maintain good health, independence, and quality of life.”
Sydiongco emphasized the importance of bringing health services closer to the community, especially to vulnerable populations. “Our goal is simple—to make health care reachable, responsive, and relevant. By conducting screenings at the community level, we are able to detect risks early and provide immediate advice and interventions.”
More than just medical assessment, the event provided immediate assistance to seniors who needed corrective lenses.
Regional Program Manager for Essential Non-Communicable Diseases and Regional Blindness Prevention Program Manager Francisco S. De Vera said that, “Seeing clearly is a basic need, especially for older adults who rely on their vision for daily activities.”
“Minsan, isang pares lamang ng salamin ang nagiging daan upang gumaan ang kanilang pamumuhay—and we are happy to be a bridge to that. Sama-sama po nating pangalagaan ang kalusugan ng ating mga nakatatanda,” he added.
“We call on families and communities to continue championing the health of our senior citizens at maasahan nyo po na patuloy po kaming magdadala ng serbisyong may malasakit sa bawat sulok ng Ilocos Region,” De Vera emphasized.
The DOH Ilocos CHD continues to strengthen its programs promoting Healthy Aging, encouraging communities to support their elderly and to avail of free health services through their respective local health units.
